Boston, MA USA – June 22, 2021 – Integrated Biometrics (IB), the world leader in mobile, FBI-certified biometric scanners, Ultrasonic Systems, Inc. (USI), a leader in ultrasonic spray coating systems, and NBD Nanotechnologies (NBD Nano), the surface coating experts, are pleased to announce the combination of an innovative material and application process that enables a higher standard of protection of IB’s biometric fingerprint scanners.
“Protecting the health of the individual utilizing our biometric products is one of our top priorities. We have continued to innovate and establish a market leadership position by partnering with USI and NBD to ensure the highest quality of protection as compared to conventional coatings and applications processes,” said Doug Loy, President Integrated Biometrics.
The PRISM-800 is a large format, high-speed X-Y-Z spray coating system designed for the thin, precise uniform application of coatings and suspensions for high-volume, high-throughput production requirements. RepelFlex MBED, an ultra-thin, transparent coating, is designed to provide outstanding antimicrobial, anti-scratch, and anti-stain protection.
“Innovation in materials and application processes allows equipment manufacturers the ability to upgrade their products to ensure the precise implementation of coatings that can reduce the growth of odor or stain causing bacteria,” said Deckard Sorensen, CEO of NBD Nano. “Our collaborative approach facilitated rapid product innovation and speed to market.”
“USI’s proprietary, nozzle-less ultra-Thin Coating Application Technology (tCAT) provides a more uniform and repeatable coating application than conventional spray nozzles,” said Stuart Erickson, President at USI. USI’s ultrasonic spray head is a solid-state device with no moving parts. It atomizes the coating liquid using ultrasonic energy and then shapes the spray into a flat, sheet-like pattern using low pressure air flow. The spray head is “cleaned in place.” No intricate adjustments are required for setup and no disassembly is required for cleaning.

Haverhill, MA USA – October 15, 2019 – The fuel cell market continues to grow rapidly with projections of more than 20% CAGR through the mid-2020s. Commercial-scale manufacturing is spread throughout China, India Europe, the United States, and Russia as a wider set of consumer application areas emerge, such as personal transportation, portable back-up power, and residential primary power. While industry leaders look into the future, manufacturers across the globe are increasing their production capabilities to meet with real-world demand.
Ultrasonic Systems, Inc. (USI), a leader in high performance coating application equipment and an early entrant into the fuel cell market, is reporting a sharp increase in shipments of its PRISM ultra-Thin Coating Application Technology (tCAT) spray coating platforms for use in fuel cell manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, and Asia. Manufacturers have shifted their equipment investment from the lab-scale PRISM 400 to larger PRISM 500 and 800 systems for added capacity in their commercial-scale manufacturing lines.
“The increase in shipments to fuel cell manufactures quite accurately matched projections for growth in the adoption of this innovative power generation technology,” said Stuart Erickson, President at USI. “USI’s PRISM systems with our tCAT innovation will significantly contribute the mass commercialization of fuel cell technologies by delivering a reliable and efficient method for the application of various coatings used in the manufacturing process.”
The coating process presents a major challenge to developers and manufacturers of fuel cells. Many of the coatings used in fuel cell manufacturing are suspensions and may contain precious metals like platinum, carbon, and ceramics, among others. These materials are often expensive, require specialized liquid delivery systems, and need to be applied uniformly at a specified thickness. USI’s coating systems, featuring patented, nozzle-less ultra-Thin Coating Application Technology (tCAT), are proven for the precise deposition of catalyst inks, electrolyzers, slurries, and other proprietary materials, critical to PEM, DMFC and SOFC fuel cell production.

Haverhill, MA – Haverhill, MA, USA, September 25, 2018 – Ultrasonic Systems, Inc. (USI), a leader in high performance coating application equipment, is announcing the sale of several of its PRISM ultra-Thin Coating Application Technology (tCAT) spray coating platforms for use in package level electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding using advanced silver conformal coatings.
Since first announcing this capability, USI has shipped multiple systems to semiconductor manufacturers in China, Taiwan, and the United States to support manufacturing using advanced silver materials from major providers. Unlike sputtering-based coating equipment, this new process has proven to have excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (1-10 µm), improved design flexibility, and lower overall cost of operations and ownership.
“The use of silver coatings for package level EMI shielding has rapidly moved from the lab to the production floor,” said Stuart Erickson, President at USI. “Smartphones and other smart devices have increasingly-compact form factors that demand higher performing EMI shield effectiveness. Our PRISM systems with our tCAT technology have proven to outperform other coating systems when measured against our customer’s technical and business objectives.”
Key to the acceptance of these new silver EMI materials was the superior coating capabilities of USI’s core technology called tCAT. This proprietary nozzle-less ultra-Thin Coating Application Technology is used for thin, uniform application of a wide variety of coatings from pure solutions to high-solids suspensions and slurries. USI’s tCAT utilizes “nozzle-less” ultrasonic spray technology combined with a precision metering pump liquid delivery system, which is part of a coating system platform with a motion and positioning system for the spray head, and a transport system for the substrates to be coated.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is a process by which disruptive electromagnetic energy is transmitted from one electronic device to another via radiated or conducted paths, or both. In electronic components, devices, and systems, EMI can adversely affect the performance of today’s faster, smaller, electronic devices that contain digital circuits. EMI shielding helps designers obtain the highest possible operating and processing speeds from the smallest possible physical package without performance-degrading interference.
